Orofacial Myology the study of oral and facial muscles as they relate to dentition (the development of teeth and their arrangement in the mouth), chewing, swallowing and overall health.
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD) are abnormal patterns of the mouth and face that may interfere with growth and development of facial muscles. OMDs may also interfere with how the muscles are used for talking, eating and breathing.
Open Mouth posture (chronic mouth breathing)
Inability to breathe through the nose because of large tonsils/allergies
Tongue or lip ties (limited tongue movement)
Prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use
Messy Eating
Difficulty closing the lips to swallow
